Part 1: Courage
By Sandi Rhodes
Up until 5 years ago, if given a choice between going on stage naked, or going on stage to sing, I would have stripped. That is not a joke. I spent my entire life scared to death of anyone hearing me sing. Not friends, not family...nobody. I would sing in a choir, but if asked to sing a single note on my own I'd want to puke. And then...one night I was put on the spot by a couple of women who were performing for a group. I didn't realize that people had heard me singing when I thought I was alone, and so they expected me to sing for the group. I broke out in a sweat and stammered trying to get out of it...and then remembered that Cecilia was there. She was 4. I knew immediately that I had to sing. If she sees me chicken out, then that is what she learns, and I did not want that for her. It is awful to be afraid. So I did it. I sang a song...and then I sang another! My feet didn't touch the ground for days, and I haven't shut up since! I have always dreamed of being in a musical, but of course, afraid to try. Recently I saw that The Glens Falls Community Theater group was putting on "The Music Man"...my favorite! I had to do it.Tonight were the auditions. Cecilia came with me and wanted to be in it, too. When we sere signing up, I asked her if she just wanted to be in the chorus, of if she wanted to try for the role of Amaryllis. She said that she wanted to try for a role. While we were waiting, she said, "I've never been on stage before. " When they called up the girls for Amaryllis, only one other girl went up, and Ceci went right up without hesitation. She didn't know the lyrics, because we didn't realize she was going to audition until she was! But she listened, and did her best, and I could just bust with pride.I auditioned to be one of the Pick A Little Ladies. I LOVE that song, and I sing it all the time at work! I did as Ceci did...I went up without hesitation, did my best, and had fun. I am also busting with pride in myself! This was HUGE for me!!The good news is that Ceci and I both get to go back and be in the chorus, which will be a Blast! The chorus will be doing Shipoopi. That's a fun song! The best news, is that Ceci and I both tried something new, and it was great! So, the performances will be October 24-26 at Glens Falls High School. Who's going?!! — feeling excited.
